ThaiGAP farm access to major international markets

Published: 2/07/2010 at 12:00 AM

ThaiGAP (Good Agricultural Practice), a voluntary private sector standard for safe and sustainable Thai farm products, was officially certified in May as being equivalent to the GlobalGAP standard, said Chusak Chuenprayoth, vice-chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce's food and agriculture committee.

There are about 900 certified producers in Thailand.

Tesco in London now recognises this standard and we expect more companies to follow suit," said Mr Chusak.

The ThaiGAP project will start with fruits and vegetables that have been barred from entry into countries where high quality of goods and environment-friendly farms and operations are crucial. Shrimp products are next on the list, he said.
The project aims to have 100 Thai farmers certified by the year-end.
